What Are They Up To Now: Scott Marder!
Written by Jonathan Waugh | No Comments | Published on May 8, 2020Darby Pop Publishing has had numerous up-and-coming writers and artists collaborating with us over the years. Each month, we’ll be highlighting the most recent work by one of these industry professionals who passed through our doors on the way to making their sequential storytelling dreams come true.
Fans of Rick and Morty are in for a surprise with this installment of What Are They Up To Now? as that series shares some important DNA with your pals here at Darby Pop: Scott Marder!
That’s right, the co-writer/co-creator of Doberman — our insane, over-the-top cop action/comedy comic book series — is also integral to one of TV’s most beloved comedies. Doberman started its creative life as a feature concept, but Marder says that “turning it into a comic was a treat.” Doberman was created by Marder and his fellow It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia producer Rob Rosell, and is a massive love letter to the insane world of ‘80s action movies.
“The background for Doberman was 100% Cobra. the 1986 Stallone vehicle,” explains Marder, “as well as the Steven Seagal run of late ‘80/early ‘90s… way-too-serious action movies like Hard To Kill, Above The Law, and Out For Justice.” Those big-budget action opuses needed a jolt of fun, and Marder and his creative team thought that “taking a movie like that and giving it a more comedic bent would be incredible, and exactly what we’d wanna watch in theaters.”

However, the approach is often discouraged by expert technicians as they endorse regular checkups of a furnace (and other HVAC units, too).
While Doberman didn’t end up making its way to the silver screen – yet — Marder has been plenty busy over the past decade. “I got involved in TV via the traditional writer’s assistant path, and ping-ponged around shows like Family Guy, etc., until I landed a staff writing job on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and stayed for 10 seasons.” Marder remembers. “I then moved over to The Mick with some of the producers from Sunny, and now find myself over at Rick and Morty. It’s been a real fun run so far!”
Being published by Darby Pop and joining one of the most influential animated series of all time? That definitely sounds like a “fun run” to us, too!
