What Are They Up To Now: Adrian Reynolds!
Written by Jonathan Waugh | No Comments | Published on May 22, 2019Darby Pop Publishing has collaborated with numerous writers and artists over the years. And once you’re part of the family…
So, starting this month, I’ll be highlighting the current work of just some of those creatives who have passed through our doors while pursuing their four-color dreams.
Writer Adrian Reynolds has certainly kept himself busy since Women of Darby Pop #1 was released. From developing projects for forthcoming short films to running scriptwriting classes, – plus, of course, new work for comics. In other words, he’s the perfect subject to kick off our inaugural Darby Pop: What Are They Up To Now?
Enjoy…

“I knew there was an artist in Nottingham – Christopher Held — looking to work with a writer, but my focus was initially elsewhere,” Adrian explained. “ Eventually, Adrian did get in-touch with Christopher, and was exposed to some of his art. “ I loved the European sensibility, and discovered Christopher was German… working here (in the U.K.) on a computer game. He wanted to do a story set in Edinburgh, and the tone he talked about – a darkly comic thriller – really appealed to me.”
Thus, a partnership was born. Mojo Rising is a work-in-progress, and Adrian assures me he’ll update us.

After a decade of writing low-budget, naturalistic work made or intended for the screen, Adrian wanted to spread his wings. So he came up with something on his own that he describes as “ huge and ambitious and crazy.” The idea ultimately became Dadtown — focusing on a colony planet, as well as a slew of family dynamics, combining Greek and Shakespearean drama with a little bit of 2000AD.
Adrian says it “took years to come across the absolute perfect art team in the form of Raben White (linework) and Jess Parry (colors) — who have been a joy to work with.” Like all great collaborations, Adrian explains, “there’s an energy that comes out when we’re together that brings out a particular kind of wrongness that’s just right for Dadtown.” But, after publishing the series online for a time, Dadtown was delayed for a few years. Now, it’s finished… and Adrian, Raben, and Jess say they “couldn’t be happier with our 150-page creation. Next step is to get a print version out into the world.”
In addition, Adrian has again collaborated with Tamo — the colorist he was paired with on Women of Darby Pop — and their efforts were featured at an exhibition in Spain.
Adrian also has an award-winning short film — White Lily – with close to a million YouTube views; it can be seen on Amazon Prime, too. Director Tristan Ofield and Adrian are about to make another short film together titled Citrus.
Finally, Adrian is also regularly featured in Leftlion Magazine in collaboration with artist Corrina Rothwell. In each issue, the pair focus on a new topic… but Adrian says he and Rothwell are “particularly proud of their December piece about food poverty that led a local café to offer festive meals to people for just £1.”
