What Are They Up To Now: Jeff Burns!
Written by Jonathan Waugh | No Comments | Published on February 16, 2021Darby Pop Publishing has had numerous up-and-coming writers and artists collaborating with us over the years. Each month, we’ll be highlighting the most recent work by one of these industry professionals who passed through our doors on the way to making their sequential storytelling dreams come true.
Our Women of Darby Pop anthology proved to be a great launching pad for many creators, and writer Jeff Burns is no exception. But he has expanded beyond the paneled page since then, exploring many other mediums including podcasts and web series.
Burns has been the co-host of the podcast Super Geeked Up for the past few years, and recently celebrated the show’s 300th episode. “Super Geeked Up is a geeky chat and improv comedy show I created and host live on Wednesday nights at 11pmEST/8pmPST.” Burns explains. The show combines many different elements, including plenty of audience participation, as Burns and his co-host Francis Fernandez “ask zany, geeky questions and play fun, geek-themed improv games with a bunch of guests.”
But Burns isn’t content to simply host. He’s also kept busy with projects like his web series, Super Knocked Up, an action/comedy concerning a supervillain and her nemesis forced to parent together. “The idea was born when I was taking a six-month screenwriting course through ScreenwritingU. The first thing we did was work on coming-up with a high concept that we would then use to write a feature-length script. I’ve always loved superheroes and comic books and was trying to think of something that I hadn’t really seen done before in the genre, at least not in movies or TV. And then the idea hit me: ‘What would happen if a super-villain and superhero had a baby together?’” Initially conceived as one longer story, Burns broke the script into episodes and turned it into a web-series that you can find on Youtube as well as on Amazon video. There’s even a comic book tie-in!
Burns has fond memories of his time with us, explaining “I really enjoyed working with Darby Pop on the Women of Darby Pop anthology. Getting to collaborate with artist Brent Hibbard was a fantastic experience. We gelled really well together and even worked together after the Darby Pop book was released.” Burns had an equally positive experience with the Darby Pop crew. “It was super-cool to see my story and Brent’s awesome art in the issue with so many other talented writers and artists. And the staff at Darby Pop was great to work with. They were always very professional. Hopefully, we can collaborate on something again in the near future!”
We hope so, too, Jeff! Assuming you can fit us in to your already packed schedule, that is…
