Darby Pop has had numerous up and coming writers and artists in the comic industry under our banner over the years. Every month we’ll be highlighting the work of the writers and artists that came through our doors on their way to making their comic dreams come true.

Creator/writer Garth Matthams didn’t waste any time before returning to the keyboard after Darby Pop published The Living Finger. In fact, the experience of putting together that book offered him valuable lessons that have benefitted his newest creation. “After releasing The Living Finger, I realized I’d done a lot of things wrong – namely, I created inside of a bubble. I didn’t really tell anyone what I was doing,” Matthams explained. His latest series (with artist Kenan Halilovic), Witch Creek Road, was – like The Living Finger – initially funded via Kickstarter, but Matthams started posting it online for free at websites like Tapas and Webtoons in order to help build-up an audience. Which it did. And that led Webtoons to reach out and move Witch Creek Road to the “Featured” section of their website.

Witch Creek Road is inspired by “cabin movies” like Evil Dead and Cabin In The Woods, with a dash of Lovecraftian horror. Matthams made sure that fans of The Living Finger would be rewarded when they checked out his latest. “Witch Creek Road takes place in the same universe as The Living Finger, and two of the characters that make appearances in The Living Finger also appear in Witch Creek Road,”, Matthams revealed. And that interconnectedness isn’t a afterthought. In the epilogue of The Living Finger, a display case houses “the book that was used to summon the demons in Witch Creek Road,” Matthams explained, “And in another of the display cases is the knife that was used to summon the Skinned Man (one of the main baddies from Witch Creek Road Season 2)”.
