Dead Squad
Dead Squad creators/writers Stephen Scaia and Matthew Federman may not have any new comic book series on their immediate horizon, but you won’t have to wait long to see what they’ve cooked-up next. In fact, Federman/Scaia’s new TV event series, Blood and Treasure, is airing right now on CBS!
Pairing an Antiques Dealer with an Art Thief in a battle against an International Terrorist, the series has already been given a 13-episode order from the network, and premiered Tuesday, May 21st. Fans of classic adventure tales like Raiders of The Lost Ark, Tomb Raider, and the Uncharted video game series will find plenty to love.
“Matthew and I have always loved adventure and, specifically, treasure hunt stories,” Scaia explains. “We’ve been trying to make a treasure-hunting show for the better part of 10 years. We’ve sold at least five different pilots to as many networks—everything from present-day action to historical WWII drama versions — but Blood and Treasure was the first to get the green-light.”

One of the reasons Blood & Treasure received that coveted go-ahead is thanks to a very real-world issue. “What made the difference for Blood and Treasure was learning how ISIS was using looted blood antiquities to fund their terrorism campaigns. Those were the stakes we had been missing in all the other versions, giving us as a great ‘why now’.” But, Scaia and Federman were also determined to keep Blood and Treasure from getting too dark, with even more heightened action than the world of Dead Squad. We “specifically wanted B&T to be something that everyone in the family can get excited about and enjoy together—there’s a little something for everyone in it.“
Dead Squad artist Netho Diaz hasn’t been resting on his laurels, either. Since working with Darby Pop, Diaz has contributed art for the Halo series of comics from Dark Horse, as well as IDW Games’ Escape From 100 Million B.C. He’s also been a regular artist for IDW’s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series written by Larry Hama.
