Danny Flores
Artist: Women of Darby Pop
Danny Flores’ passion for comics is heavily influenced by his love of art and design. This passion is rooted in a lifelong appreciation of storytelling and aesthetics, which started in childhood from his weekly treks to a bookstore to spend what little money he could save on comic books.
As any young boy, Danny had an active and boundless imagination. The grand comic tales he read, illustrated by some of the industry’s juggernauts, helped him focus that never-ending imagination into sketching. No piece of paper, blank notebook space, envelope, or napkin was safe around him. Once the item entered his presence, it didn’t escape until it was satisfactorily covered in sketches of DC and Marvel heroes in the style of the artists of the time… the Buscemas, Romitas, Kirby, Garcia-Lopez, and many others.
As he grew older he continued to immerse himself in the work of other artists that he greatly admired, including Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Travis Charest, Adam Hughes, and the whole host of Japanese artists responsible for works such as Akira, Ninja Scroll, and Ghost in the Shell. Danny’s love for illustration drove him to pursue formal art and design education at Texas State Technical College and Baylor University, where he honed other skills such as digital art, conceptual thinking, sculpture, painting and ceramics.
Today, Danny jumps at opportunities to flex that creativity, both at work and at home. However, no matter how far he gets in the Design world, his heart and head always come back to comics. They are his first love and his enduring passion. In 2016, Danny became one of the winning artists of Darby Pop’s second Breaking Into Comics contest: The Women of Darby Pop.
Of course, one of Danny’s ultimate dreams is to see his work in a DC or Marvel publication. He’d love the opportunity to draw an issue of the Justice League or the classic Avengers, or his all-time favorite hero, Batman. Until then, he’ll continue to doing what he loves, illustrating and reading comics.
