What Are They Up To Now: Mark Bertolini!
Written by Jonathan Waugh | No Comments | Published on November 27, 2019Darby Pop Publishing has had numerous up-and-coming writers and artists collaborating with us over the years. Each month, we’ll be highlighting the most recent work by one of these industry professionals who passed through our doors on the way to making their sequential storytelling dreams come true.
Since releasing his acclaimed Darby Pop graphic novel Bastard’s Waltz, writer Mark Bertolini has remained incredibly busy. For starters, Bertolini has a new anthology available on Comixology titled Hand of Glory featuring 13 of his stories adapted by 13 different artists. In addition, Bertolini has two other new titles coming soon from Action Lab, the first of which will be hitting comic shops in February; see the current (December) issue of PREVIEWS to pre-order The Argus.
THE ARGUS is a 4-issue sci-fi adventure in which a young boy (Randall Patton) invents time travel. Of course, playing with the time/space continuum tends to create unintended “side-effects” such as a police force called THE ARGUS — made up of 100 different versions of Randall… including one Randall who wants to kill all of the others!
Bertolini is a big fan of Warren Ellis, whose “particular brand of science fiction has influenced my own writing, especially in THE ARGUS.” Bertolini also cites Garth Ennis as a major influence on his work, with Preacher being the series that “actually made me want to write comics. Prior to that, I wanted (only) to illustrate them.”

Looking back at his time with Darby Pop Publishing, Bertolini has nothing but nice things to say. Thank goodness. “The care and attention that my book was given was second to none. The insight and knowledge of both Jeff Kline and Renae Geerlings was priceless, and their input really elevated the story of John the Bastard.” Added Bertolini: “I hope to work with Darby Pop again in the near future, and I’m actually working on a few things that might fit quite nicely under the DP banner!”
Be sure to reach out to us when those new ideas are ready to be shared, Mark!
